Should Children Read Fan Fiction?

Abigail Williams, Writer

Should children below the age of ten be allowed to read fanfiction? Fan fiction is fiction written by a fan part of a fandom of a particular T.V show, movie, etc.  Fanfiction can be sometimes intense maybe even too intense to where everything is written in great detail. Some fanfiction doesn’t have much detail or bad language, so that children can read and not be affected.

This is all estimated over the ratings the author gives it. The rating K is kid friendly and safe for youth to read. The rating K+ is some what kid friendly, it has to be free from any foul language and violence. The rating T is for mature children to read, it may contain mild cursing, and minor violence. The rating M is for teenagers to read, it contains cursing, violence, and some what great detail. The rating MA is for 18 years or older to read, this contains great detail, violence, adult situations, and much cursing.

In my opinion, I think that children under the age of ten should be allowed to read fanfiction with adult supervision. Some of the fan fictions that have been rated a K+, that I have read, seemed as if they should be rated T. Some of the authors on fanfiction do not oblige the rules that they agreed on in the beginning. Although, not all authors are like this though and do follow through with the rules that he/she agreed on. Children should be aware of the dangers of being on the internet and so should the parents/guardians, fan fiction is sometimes too intense. Yes, I do believe that children under the age of ten should be allowed to read fanfiction, but with adult supervision.

I questioned five fifth graders and two parents of what their opinion was. Three of the fifth graders disagreed and said that they should read whatever they chose. Two of the fifth graders didn’t know what it was, so they didn’t really give me their opinion. The parents that I asked agreed with me that certain fanfiction should not be allowed to be read by ten years olds if they don’t have adult supervision.

Even though I didn’t get much results out of this question, it is highly suggested to let parents read before or supervise the fanfiction before ten year olds read it. Some children may be mature about certain fan fictions as other children are not. It really depends on the type of fan fiction and how mature the kid is.
