New Barbie Bodies

The best selling Barbie ever now has three new models alongside the original; curvy, tall and petite. Also with changed facial features on each doll, Mattel no longer has to worry about getting ongoing criticism about her unideally proportioned body and face.

The new Barbie bodies follow the 2015 edition of the hair textures, colors, and different skin tones. There will be more than 30 new Barbie dolls introduced with 4 body styles, 7 skin tones, 30 hair colors, 24 hair styles and 22 eye colors. As might be expected, the dolls are gorgeous, but more importantly, in addition to body types, they represent a diversity of individual fashions, attitudes and much more.

Mattel has been putting Barbie through a transformation for the past two years to bring the doll in line with realistic body standards and reflect the diversity of the kids playing with the dolls. Last year Mattel introduced 23 new dolls with different skin tones, hairstyles, outfits and flat feet, rather than the pointy ones meant to fit into sky-high heels, which was a great start into the new dolls they would be bringing into the new year. “By introducing more variety into the line, Barbie is offering girls choices that are better reflective of the world they see today,” Mattel said in a statement to Entertainment News about the new line.

For longtime Barbie fans, the standard doll isn’t going away. But unlike the Barbie “friends” series, the new dolls aren’t sidekicks to Barbie. They are Barbie, too.

In what is unquestionably Barbie’s “biggest change” since the toy first hit stores in 1959, Mattel is making room for other Barbies, 33 to be exact, to have a chance at taking over the shelves. And, to be honest, we’re all better for it. In order for these ideas to transform, kids and adults alike need to be able to see images of themselves in the world. In doing so, they are reminded that they can exist in the world exactly the way they are. These 33 new Barbies are making sure more people can do just that.
