Movie Review: “The Duff”

On February 20, 2015, a new comedy movie came out in theaters. The D.U.F.F is being compared to the legendary movie Mean Girls, and is supposedly hilarious and a good movie to watch. In fact, according to rottentomatoes.com, 78% of every person who watched it, enjoyed it and over half of the critics gave positive reviews such as, “ It’s the first great teen comedy since Mean Girls” written by Wendy Wrobel from the Globe and Mail and “ Funny, heartfelt, and inspirational. The best high school comedy since Easy A. Mae Whitman deserves to be a star.” written by Avi Offer from the NYC Movie Guru.

In addition to these glowing compliments, there are also some not-so good compliment such as, “As much as the film tries to follow the Easy A template, it lacks its satiric edge, and its willingness to confront high school hypocrisy head-on.” written by Randall King from Winnipeg Free Press. Despite these bad comments, 17 out of the 26 top critics gave this movie a fresh tomato rather than a rotten one. If that doesn’t convince you, the $11 million that was made in the box office so far should.

The D.U.F.F. is about a Senior in high school named Bianca (Mae Whitman) who discovers from a jock named Wesley (Robbie Amell) that she is considered a D.U.F.F. around the school. When she questions him, he tells her that a D.U.F.F. is a designated ugly fat friend though, according to Wesley, being a D.U.F.F. doesn’t mean you’re ugly or fat. All it means is that you are the lowly one of your group of friends, in this case, Bianca’s friends Jess ( Skyler Samuels) and Casey (Bianca A. Santos). Knowing this, Bianca seeks to save her senior year and prove that she is more than a D.U.F.F.. In order to do so, Bianca enlists Wesley to help her reinvent herself. Unfortunately for Bianca, she is plagued by Wesley’s ex-girlfriend and school mean girl Madison (Bella Thorne).

This movie is said to be both funny and motivating to students who feel as if they are D.U.F.F.s themselves. Its message is that you can be more than what people expect of you. I believe that this is a good movie to watch and may inspire some people to take another look around. This movie is rated P.G.-13 due to strong language and minimal sexual content. Make sure to get permission to watch it from your parents.
